Big Ideas for Little Hands: October 2015

Red Ribbon Week: Door Decorating

Hey guys! Just wanted to pop in really quick to share some of our Red Ribbon Week activities. Each year we have a contest and decorate our doors for Red Ribbon Week. This is the only time of the year that we are allowed to decorate our door. Something about paper on a fire proof door does not make Mr. Fire Marshall very happy, sigh.

So check out these awesome doors! We have some amazingly talented people in our school!

Hope you are having a great full moon, Halloween craziness week!

Peek at Week: Pumpkins

Last week was one of the busiest weeks of the school year. Field Trip and Fall Fest all the same week. Yup, that means there is one tired teacher sitting on this couch. I was the coordinator for our Field Trip to the Pumpkin Patch and we had such an amazing time!!! After a few minor bus mishaps (one teacher forgetting money and turning around, a few wrong turns, getting lost, and almost crashing into the other bus) we made it safely to the Pumpkin Patch for a jam packed day of pumpkin fun!

Then Friday was the Fall Fest. I wish I took more pictures but being co-chair of the Fall Fest, I was running around all day like a chicken with my head cut off. So needless to say, pictures didn't happen. But I will try to round up some photos for you to see. It was an awesome western day! Here are a few murals that our amazing art teacher made! She is so talented!

We also had a "jail" so students could pay to lock their teachers in jail for a few minutes. This was a huge hit!

So when we were not running all over the place, we managed to squeeze in a few fun spider activities this week!

Find the missing letter from Caitlin Clabby.

 Spider Headbands from Deanna Jump

We also did some fun Spider experiments from Deanna Jump's Science Pack.
We learned how spiders do not stick to their own webs.

Then we learned how Spiders eat their prey! These were a huge hit! They were so excited to pretend to be spiders!

We also made spider books to share what we have learned this week!

We also created our new Spider Flippy Flaps!

Next week will be all about Pumpkins. We will begin our new Pumpkin Flippy Flap. Click the picture to head to my store to get a closer look.

Peek at Week: Spiders

Last week was everything bats! It was a jam packed week and full of learning. I have never seen my kids so excited to learn! And I love teaching all things fall and Halloween so this was perfect!!!

We started by creating a fun KWL chart to see what we already knew about bats. I was surprised at how much they already knew!

Our weekly poem was all about bats! I heard them singing this all day. Click the picture below to grab this at DeeDee's store!

Love this drawing of their interpretation of echolocation!!!
All week we worked on a Bat's Fact Book from Deanna! We learned so much about bats and they did amazing showing what they learned! Click the picture to head to Deanna's store!

We then made this cute little bat craft to show what bats can do, what bats have, and what bats are. Click the picture to head to Abby's blog to grab this!

During Daily 5, we practiced spelling our CVC words. They are picking up on this so quickly! I am so proud. Click the picture to head over to Caitlyn's store!

Our morning chit chats were also all about bats! They loved labeling the bat! Click the picture to head on over to Deanna's store!

We also worked on our newest Flippy Flap. These are becoming a huge hit in my room. They are always asking when they get to work on them!

Next week will be all about Spiders!!!! Can I just say that I am deathly afraid of spiders!!! And when I say afraid I don't mean like scream like a little girl. I mean that I have jumped out of a moving car on the interstate because there was a spider crawling in the car. Anyways, teaching about spiders is fun as long as I don't have to see any real spiders!

We will be starting our newest flippy flap next week. Click below to take a peek!
