Let me start out by saying that I am terrified of those creepy, crawly 6-legged yucky creatures that we call insects. But for some crazy reason unknown to me, the kids love them and are obsessed with them!!! So teaching about them is a must and the kiddos get so excited during Insect week! Now I don't mind teaching about them and looking at pictures. In fact, I love teaching about them. But bring one in my room and I'm running for the door.
Last year we had so much fun learning about these creepy crawly bugs. Check out the fun!
We
started off our week with a great BrainPop video. We love Moby and
Annie and they also have the best videos to introduce a lesson.
We began by learning about bees! We love Deanna Jump's chit chats. Great interactive lessons that really get us excited about learning.
We
then tasted different foods that were made with honey and they graphed
which was their favorite. I was shocked that the pure honey was the big
hit.
After learning tons of fun facts about bees. We wrote some fun facts and made this cute little bee craft from Cara Carroll.
Then
we moved into learning about those creepy crawly ants. This is one of
my favorite books to read each year. If you've never read it before it
is a must. Great piece for what happens next, or persuasive writing. The
story is about this little ant who is begging a kid not to squish him.
In the end, the author leaves it up to the reader as to whether the kid
should squish the ant or not. I had each kid write what they would do
and explain why. Then we made these adorable ant projects to go with our
writing! These are also from the amazing Cara Carroll.
I have also made some fun Flippy Flaps for insects that we will be working on for the next few weeks!
